What we look at.

Match the freight

Disclose commodities and maximum load values. High-value or restricted goods may need specific terms.

Check how a loss happens

Theft, refrigeration failure, unattended vehicles and storage can have different conditions or exclusions.

Read the shipper contract

Liability assumed by contract may exceed the protection in the cargo policy.

Legal liability for covered loss or damage to freight, subject to the policy's trigger, valuation and scope.

Check theft exclusions, unattended-vehicle conditions and any requirements for locks, parking, tracking or verification.

Loading and Unloading

Confirm whether the form covers the handling performed by drivers and other parties at pickup and delivery.

Reefer Breakdown

Temperature change and refrigeration failure may require specific coverage. Review maintenance requirements, excluded causes and deductibles.

Debris Removal

Review the expense limit and covered circumstances for removal of damaged cargo after a loss.

Earned Freight Charges

Some forms provide selected lost freight charges after a covered event. Confirm the trigger and sublimit.

Cargo at Rest

Check terminal storage, temporary stops, accumulation limits and maximum storage periods.

What to bring to a review

Share commodities, maximum load value, refrigeration needs, storage arrangements and key shipper contracts.

Questions & answers

Good questions to ask.

How should we choose a cargo limit?
Compare the highest realistic load and accumulation values with the contract and policy valuation. A commonly requested contract limit is not proof that the amount is sufficient for every load.
Is refrigerated freight covered automatically?
Not necessarily. Review temperature-change and refrigeration-breakdown terms, covered causes, maintenance conditions and sublimits. Obtain confirmation for the actual commodities and handling process.
Does a theft loss always trigger coverage?
No. Commodity restrictions, unattended-vehicle conditions, fictitious-pickup exclusions and other provisions can affect recovery. Confirm that the operational controls can satisfy the policy.
