What we look at.

Entities & contracts

Establish which company owns the assets, employs the staff and signs the contracts. Check its insurance obligations before signing or closing.

Property & operations

Review where you operate, what you sell and which services you provide. Confirm that your policies cover those activities and locations.

People & timing

Review work locations, payroll and the dates coverage needs to start, so insurance is considered before operations begin.

Questions & answers

Good questions to ask.

Will our Canadian policy cover U.S. operations?
Some Canadian policies cover certain U.S. activities, but that does not mean every part of your expansion is covered. We review which companies and activities are insured, along with local requirements and the policy wording.
Does every U.S. expansion need a separate policy?
Not always. The answer depends on the operation, insurer, contracts and applicable requirements. A new entity, property or workforce may need a different arrangement from occasional U.S. sales.
What changes when we hire U.S. employees?
Workers' compensation and related obligations vary by state and working arrangements. Review each work location, payroll and temporary assignment with the appropriate licensed personnel and employment advisers.
When should insurance enter an acquisition discussion?
Before closing. Review the companies and assets involved, the dates coverage must take effect and any contractual requirements. Earlier acts and claims may need separate attention. Do not assume the seller's insurance transfers with the business.
Is this service only for trucking companies?
No. The review can include U.S. properties, hotels, manufacturing, distribution, professional services and other commercial operations. Transportation also requires attention to territory and applicable operating-authority filings.
Who handles the U.S. and Canadian insurance work?
Our sister brokerage handles Canadian insurance matters. A Squared handles U.S. advice and placement through personnel licensed in the applicable U.S. jurisdiction. We agree on each team's responsibilities before work begins.
