The market is split
The Council's Q2 2026 broker survey reported average commercial auto premium increases of 4.5% and umbrella increases of 5.3%, while commercial property decreased 6.3%. These are survey averages, not a prediction for an individual fleet.

Loss severity is driving the conversation
ATRI found that heavy-truck crash rates declined from 2021 through 2024 while liability losses per mile increased materially. Underwriters are looking beyond accident count to severity, venue, litigation, claim development and the quality of post-loss response.
- Review open claims and reserve changes
- Explain corrective actions after material losses
- Connect cameras, telematics and training to specific controls
- Show management involvement in safety
Our view
A reconciled driver and vehicle record, a clear operating profile, credible loss explanations, documented controls and a deliberate plan for limits and retentions give underwriters a real basis for judgment. Begin that work well ahead of the renewal date.
A practical early agenda
Start with the items that most often delay or weaken a renewal.
- Order currently valued loss runs
- Audit vehicles, drivers, garaging, radius and commodities
- Review public authority and safety data
- Prepare large-loss narratives
- Document camera, telematics, maintenance and hiring controls
- Model deductible and limit alternatives
- Confirm customer and broker contract requirements
