Why the market exists

Specialty underwriters can price and structure risks that do not fit standardized admitted forms or appetites. The value may be form flexibility, catastrophe capacity, higher limits or willingness to evaluate an unusual operation.

What changes for the buyer

Non-admitted placement can involve surplus-lines taxes and fees, different cancellation provisions, minimum earned premium and state-specific protections. These points deserve explanation before the decision.

  • Carrier financial strength
  • Coverage trigger and exclusions
  • Deductible or retention
  • Defense treatment
  • Claims-made dates
  • Taxes, fees and minimum earned premium
  • Subjectivities and warranties

The wholesale relationship

A wholesale broker or MGA can add specialized carrier knowledge and placement access. The client should still receive a coherent explanation of who does what, which markets were considered and how the final form compares.

Our view

The right question is whether the structure addresses the exposure, whether the carrier and form are appropriate, and whether the client understands the tradeoffs. A specialty quote should be read closely, not treated as a commodity.
